Was ist Live A Live?
Live A Live is a turn-based role-playing game originally developed by Square for the Super Famicom in 1994 and later remade by Square Enix using the HD-2D visual style. The game stands out from traditional JRPGs by presenting several distinct stories set across different eras of history, each featuring unique characters, gameplay mechanics, and narrative themes.
Rather than following a single protagonist throughout the adventure, players can choose from multiple chapters that take place in vastly different time periods. These include Prehistory, Imperial China, the Wild West, Present Day, the Near Future, the Distant Future, and other settings. Each chapter introduces a new hero with their own goals, challenges, and supporting cast, allowing players to experience a variety of storytelling styles within one game.
The Prehistory chapter focuses on survival and tribal life before the invention of language, relying heavily on visual storytelling. Imperial China centers on martial arts training and the search for a worthy successor. The Wild West chapter features preparation for a showdown against dangerous outlaws, while the Present Day chapter resembles a fighting tournament inspired by classic martial arts stories. Other chapters introduce science fiction themes, psychic abilities, robotics, and futuristic mysteries.
Combat uses a unique grid-based turn-based system. During battles, characters and enemies move around a tactical battlefield where positioning plays a crucial role. Different abilities have varying ranges, attack patterns, and area-of-effect properties. This system encourages players to consider movement and placement in addition to selecting attacks and skills.
Each protagonist possesses distinct abilities that reflect their setting and personality. Because every chapter is designed around different gameplay concepts, players regularly encounter new mechanics and combat styles. This variety helps each story feel fresh and unique while maintaining a consistent RPG foundation.
One of the game's greatest strengths is its storytelling structure. While the chapters initially appear unrelated, subtle connections gradually emerge. As players complete more stories, they begin to discover links between characters, themes, and events across time periods. Eventually, the separate narratives converge into a larger storyline that ties the entire experience together.
The HD-2D remake enhances the original game's presentation with modern lighting effects, updated character sprites, orchestrated music, voice acting, and improved user interfaces. The visual style combines detailed pixel art with three-dimensional environments, creating a distinctive look that preserves the spirit of the original release while modernizing its presentation.
Music plays a major role throughout the adventure. Each chapter features its own soundtrack tailored to its setting, ranging from traditional historical themes to futuristic electronic compositions. The remake also includes newly arranged versions of the original soundtrack.
The narrative explores themes such as destiny, heroism, hatred, redemption, and the passage of time. Despite the differences between chapters, these themes create a sense of unity across the game's diverse settings and characters.
