DreadOut 2 is a third-person survival horror adventure developed and published by Digital Happiness. Released in February 2020, the game serves as a sequel to the cult horror title DreadOut and expands upon its predecessor with larger environments, more exploration, improved storytelling, and additional combat mechanics. Inspired by Indonesian myths, folklore, and urban legends, the game offers a unique horror experience that stands apart from traditional Western survival horror titles.
The story follows Linda Meillinda, a high school student gifted with the supernatural ability to see and sense spirits. After surviving the terrifying events of the first game, Linda finds herself once again drawn into a world of ghosts, curses, and dark supernatural forces. Strange incidents begin occurring throughout her hometown, and Linda discovers that powerful entities from Indonesian folklore are threatening both the living world and the spirit realm. Determined to stop the growing danger, she embarks on a journey filled with horrifying encounters and ancient mysteries.
Unlike the original game, which focused heavily on linear progression, DreadOut 2 introduces semi-open environments that encourage exploration. Players can wander through neighborhoods, abandoned buildings, dark streets, cemeteries, and hidden supernatural locations while searching for clues and completing optional side activities. Exploration often rewards players with collectibles, lore entries, and encounters with local spirits based on Indonesian mythology.
One of the game's defining mechanics is Linda's smartphone. Similar to the camera system seen in classic ghost-hunting horror games, players use the smartphone camera to detect, weaken, and banish supernatural entities. Some ghosts can only be seen through the camera lens, creating tense moments where players must confront terrifying spirits directly rather than avoiding them. This mechanic remains one of the most recognizable aspects of the DreadOut series.
The sequel also introduces more direct combat. In addition to using her camera against spirits, Linda can defend herself with melee weapons and projectiles against physical threats. This creates a blend of survival horror, exploration, and action gameplay. While some encounters focus on ghost hunting, others require traditional combat and careful resource management.
A major strength of DreadOut 2 is its use of Indonesian folklore. Players encounter legendary supernatural beings such as Kuntilanak and other local spirits rarely seen in mainstream video games. This cultural foundation gives the game a distinct atmosphere and helps it stand out among horror titles. Community discussions frequently highlight the mythology and unique setting as some of the game's strongest features.
Visually, the game presents dark urban environments, abandoned locations, and eerie supernatural realms using the Unreal Engine. Combined with atmospheric sound design, unsettling music, and sudden ghost encounters, the game creates a persistent feeling of tension and dread.
