Disney Infinity 2.0: Marvel Super Heroes is a toys-to-life action-adventure sandbox game developed by Avalanche Software and published by Disney Interactive Studios. Released in 2014, it is the second entry in the Disney Infinity series and introduces a major focus on Marvel superheroes while expanding the Toy Box creation system from the original game.
The game combines structured story-based “Play Set” missions with a highly flexible sandbox mode called Toy Box. In the Play Sets, players use physical or digital figures to unlock specific campaigns centered around Marvel characters and storylines. These include separate adventures for The Avengers, Spider-Man, and Guardians of the Galaxy, each offering unique missions, enemies, and environments inspired by Marvel comics and films.
In the Avengers storyline, Loki and M.O.D.O.K. attempt to rebuild the Casket of Ancient Winters, threatening to freeze New York City, while heroes like Iron Man, Thor, and Black Widow work together to stop them. The Spider-Man Play Set focuses on Green Goblin and Mysterio’s symbiote-based invasion, while the Guardians of the Galaxy storyline revolves around stopping Ronan the Accuser and protecting Knowhere.
Gameplay blends third-person combat, exploration, and character progression. Each hero has unique abilities and skill trees that can be upgraded, allowing players to customize fighting styles and unlock stronger attacks over time. Combat is designed to be accessible for younger players while still offering variety through different superhero powers and team combinations.
The Toy Box mode is one of the most important parts of the game. It acts as an open-ended creation system where players can build their own worlds, mini-games, and challenges using a large library of interactive objects, environments, and tools. Players can combine Marvel and Disney characters in creative ways, design racing maps, platforming levels, or even entirely new game modes.
A major feature of Disney Infinity 2.0 is its “toys-to-life” system, where physical figurines are placed on a portal to bring characters into the game. These figures unlock playable heroes and can also be leveled up and customized through in-game progression. This system made collecting figures a key part of the overall experience.
The game also improved on the original Disney Infinity by adding better combat mechanics, expanded customization, and more structured gameplay within both Play Sets and Toy Box mode. While the story campaigns are relatively shorter compared to some other action-adventure titles, the creative freedom in Toy Box significantly increases replay value.
